Sisterhood

Dr. Steven Diner, Chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark to Speak

Our next Kabbalat Shabbat program will be held on Friday, February 5. Our speaker is Steven Diner, Chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark. His topic will be “Rutgers–Newark:  America’s Most Diverse University.”  6:30 PM Services and 7:30 PM Dinner & Symposium.  $18 per person.

What is especially fascinating about Rutgers-Newark is the incredible diversity of its student body: students from 70 countries, speaking dozens of native languages, in what was once the place where the first generation of college-educated New Jersey Jews got their degrees, and is now the place where a first generation of college-educated immigrants and minorities are getting their degrees. How this happened and what it means for Newark (and for that matter for us) is a fascinating story.

Please RSVP to the Temple 973.994.2290 by February 3 so we can order the appropriate amount of food and set up enough tables!

Social Action Committee — Women’s Interfaith Dinner
Sisterhood members prepared delicious food for dinner, helped set up and served as co-hostesses for this annual event, held on January 20. The speaker, Gabrielle Glaser, discussed her book, America Uncorked: Women, Drink, and Denial, a topic many people don’t want to talk about.
Judaica Shop
As Passover and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah season get into full swing, don’t forget to visit our Judaica Gift Shop for appropriate gifts and ritual items. Run by long-time gift maven Miriam Mitnick, the shop is stocked with beautiful items for Pesach, B’nai Mitzvot and more. It’s the perfect place to purchase a tallit for the B'nai Mitzvah celebrant and their families. No need to trek to the Lower East Side; Miriam has access to catalogs and the same items found in New York City. If you don’t see what you want, we can get it for you! We even have extra large tallit for tall men and can provide custom kippot for your guests. Remember that the Temple office can help you if the shop isn’t open. For more information, e-mail President Susan Fein at solar4444@aol.com.
Donations of Etz Chaim
Would you like to recognize a loved one or a special occasion in a way that is both meaningful and long-lasting? Your $50 donation will purchase a copy of Etz Chaim, our new congregational machzor. The book purchased with your donation will contain a bookplate including the names of the donor and honoree and will reside in our beautiful sanctuary for use during our regular services. Donations may be made either “in honor of” or “in memory of” a loved one. Please send your check to the Temple, to the attention of Sisterhood.
