February’s Sunday morning minyan was a heartwarming experience. Rabbi Kulwin led 30 members of the Men’s Club and Sisterhood in a traditional, meaningful and spiritual service. The highlight of the morning was celebrating Jack Oelbaum’s 101st birthday, in the building that has meant so much to him all these years!
The next Sunday minyan service will take place on March 7 at 8:30 AM, followed by breakfast. I urge all of you to attend; children and sweat pants are most welcome! It truly is a wonderful new tradition at Temple B’nai Abraham.
Please join me on March 25 at 7:30 PM when the Rachel Coalition brings us new interactive program and responds to Domestic Violence in Jewish Homes. I urge you to attend and bring your friends. It is open to the community.
I look forward to seeing you soon and often!
B’shalom,
Ed
From Bruce Greene, Vice President
For the last three years, I have been honored to serve as a Temple officer, including the last year as Vice President. In that capacity, I am liaison to a number of committees. Those committees include Ritual, Ushering, High Holy Day Ushering and Development
The Ritual Committee chaired by former President Peter Klein, works closely with the Rabbi and Cantors on worship services and practices at TBA. Members of the Ritual Committee serve as Shamash at Shabbat morning services—providing assistance to the families of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah and to the clergy. In recent years, the Ritual Committee has been intimately involved in the selection of the new Humash and the new Siddur for the Temple. Both have been very well received by the congregation. The Ritual Committee is also responsible for the care and protection of TBA’s religious articles. At the most recent meeting, Ritual Committee members, along with Cantor Epstein, learned about and participated in the process of Torah restoration from the scribe who is currently working on one of our scrolls.
Ushering Committee Chair Jeff Klein is responsible for ushering at TBA services, lectures, and other events throughout the year. In recent years, under Jeff’s leadership, TBA has instituted an Ushering Team Leader program. Congregants volunteer to lead the team of ushers at Shabbat morning services. Each Team Leader serves at two, three, or sometimes more services during the course of the year. Since the establishment of the program, the decorum at services has improved greatly. We can always use more Team Leaders. It is a wonderful and rewarding way to truly serve your synagogue. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Jeff or me. We’d love to hear from you and will provide you with orientation to the position and any help that you need.
During the High Holy Days, the ushers at services immeasurably enhance the experience of worshippers. High Holy Day Ushering Chair Arty Podnos organizes and leads the ushers throughout the High Holy Day period. Congregants volunteer to usher at one or more services. Many do so each year. We also welcome anyone interested in ushering for the first time. If you’re thinking about it, let us know. We’d love to have you join us. It is truly rewarding and much appreciated.
The Development Committee, chaired by former President Jeff Roth, is charged with working to help secure the long term financial future of TBA. This effort is still in the planning stages and has already involved a number of congregants in the process. More information will come soon.
The efforts of all of these groups depend on the commitment of members of TBA. More volunteers are always welcome. Besides doing something truly worthwhile and important, I have made new friends and had a good time volunteering at TBA. I think you will too. Volunteering at TBA benefits the Temple and the wider Jewish community. Please join us.
