The TBA High School continues the Jewish education of our young people beyond Bar and Bat Mitzvah. In a less structured, more informal setting, we address the needs of our youth and discuss current and contemporary topics that affect and relate to teenagers. We offer a program that encourages students to explore traditional Jewish subjects and their intersection with present-day issues, as well as to participate in creative and innovative social service projects.

CONFIRMATION PROGRAM: 8TH, 9TH & 10 GRADES

The weekly sessions for the Confirmation Program are held Wednesday nights for 8th and 9th graders. Eighth graders meet from 6:30 PM-8:00 PM and 9th graders meet from 8:00 PM-9:30 PM. Tenth graders meet on Thursday nights 7:30-9:00 PM.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS 2009-2010

8th Grade Class meets Wednesday nights 6:30 PM–8:00 PM

Modern Views for Teenage Jews. How does Judaism fit into my life? What does Judaism have to offer? Using a multi-media approach, this course will focus upon issues of great importance to teens, examining key moral and ethical decisions we make every day in areas such as identity, body image, cyber-bullying, friendship, the Internet and gossip, and much more. Jewish texts and Jewish history have much to teach us on these subjects. Students learn how to apply Jewish principles and Jewish traditions to daily life. Weekly email updates to parents will tie in the Jewish values to the present-day issues that will be discussed. Students have the opportunity to discuss ethics, customs, and modern day culture of Judaism in the 21st century.

9th Grade Class meets Wednesday nights 8:00 PM–9:30 PM

Real Issues for Real Teens. The class examines key topics such as poverty, violence, abortion and sexuality through the lens of Jewish tradition and Jewish texts. These discussions incorporate current events, political viewpoints concerning teenagers and hands-on activities that explore productive and useful ways to make positive changes.

10th Grade Class meets Thursday nights 7:30–9:00 PM

On the Road & Into the Community. Learning that can take place in the community and in hands-on activities is a unique and irreplaceable experience. The 10th graders participate in field trips that tie together their classroom learning with real world experience. Students will get acquainted with community services and diverse organizations that exist in the Essex County area. Students also examine and discuss controversial and often multifaceted current issues going on in society. The Confirmation ceremony will take place on Shavuot morning, May 19, 2010.

GRADUATION PROGRAM 2009-2010

11th grade meets every other Thursday night 7:00–9:00 PM

12th grade meets every other Thursday night 7:00–9:00 PM

Dinner is provided for the students 7:00 PM–7:30 PM.

Dinner and Discussion. Students that complete the Confirmation Program continue onto Temple B’nai Abraham’s High School Graduation Program. Students have the opportunity to meet together every other week to discuss transitions from high school to college, controversial issues occurring on college campuses, and current events. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a combined field trip where they will explore past and present Jewish traditions, heritage, and current issues. Trip details will be forthcoming. *Dinner is provided for the Graduation students beforehand.

Awards and Scholarships

Awards and Scholarships are offered each year for high school and college students who wish to study and tour in Israel or participate in "The March of the Living." Other awards are offered for writing essays, community involvement, and social action activities.

These awards and scholarships are provided by donations from generous members of our congregation and the various Temple constituent organizations. Contact TBA High School Director Claudia Minde cminde@tbanj.org.

TEEN TIKKUN OLAM GROUP

The Teen Tikkun Olam Group, designed for teens to be more involved in social action projects within their community, is open to students participating in the TBA High School (Temple and non-Temple members-who are enrolled in TBA High School). Under the supervision and guidance of the High School Director, the group meets bi-monthly on Sundays from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM to create, implement and coordinate community action events. The students will be provided with various options of organizations and community resource assistance. The students choose the organization based on the options presented and plan the fundraising events. Breakfast and refreshments are served.
