Oneg Shabbat Set-Up Guidelines
Thank you very much for volunteering to set up the weekly Oneg Shabbat. Please read the following information for timing, set-up, fruit purchasing and plattering.
Fruit - Please coordinate fruit purchasing with your co-volunteer. A day or 2 prior to set-up, please purchase fruit from the below list at ShopRite, Costco or Rt. 10 Farmers Market. Please mark your receipt “fruit for Oneg” including your name and date and leave it in the brown “treasurer” envelope located in the Sisterhood slots in the main office. Bernice Garbade, Sisterhood Treasurer will reimburse you promptly.
- $30 average is typically spent weekly on fruit based on 50-100 people.
- Please add an additional few items if numbers given to you exceed 150.
- Typical Fruit Assortment (please use your judgment depending on the season, prices and sales - watermelon and berries are interchangeable as needed.)
- 2 cantaloupes - produce associates are very helpful in picking out ripe melons!
- 2 honeydew
- 2 pineapples - cored with top cut off at ShopRite or spears at Costco
- 1 bag of green grapes
- 1 bag of red grapes
- 2 qts strawberries (or other berries in season)
- Watermelon can replace any of the above items
Please do not purchase pre-cut fruit or fruit from the salad bar (except pineapple spears from Costco) in order to keep our costs down.
Plattering - Set-up between 12 & 3 pm (bakery delivers between 12 & 1 - you may cut and platter the fruit at 12 and then platter the bakery items when they arrive.) Please allow 1-1/2 hours for two people setting up.
- Platters/Cutting Boards. Knives & Strainers
- New white and glass platters are stored in the Sisterhood closet in the kitchen. Tracey Bent and his staff can help locate the platters and can answer any questions. Various size platters – larger platters for fruit and different sizes for baked goods. All items needed for cutting/washing fruit are in the closet.
- Fruit
- Fruit is to be washed, cut and plattered in sections on 2 different larger trays.
- Baked Goods
- Please arrange baked goods - mixing assortments on different size platters - typically 6-8 platters are used.
- Please use the plastic wrap located on the island to wrap all platters. Refrigerate fruit – baked goods left wrapped on the island.
- Please leave all utensils used in the sink and wipe down the island.
We thank you and greatly appreciate your time involved in the Oneg Shabbat set-up.
